Q How can I fake fuller-looking lips without resorting to lip fillers? Charlotte, Battersea
A Lisa Oxenham, Marie Claire Beauty Director says:
‘Despite the focus on statement brows and feline eyes, pillow-plumped, ultra-voluminous mouths now take centre stage. So what’s new?
‘Today’s technology means – like facial fillers – lip fillers are no-longer needed. Lip plumpers containing the hydrating ingredient hyaluronic acid and soft, reflective textures are your new go-tos,’ says make-up artist Sonia Deveney who perfects this lip look on Victoria Secret supers Barbara Palvin and Nadine Leopald.
‘A lipstick with a super sheer sheen, slightly transparent pigment and the perfect colour match are your golden rules.’ This lip look has a plethora of plus points: it’s an instant face brightener, makes you look 'done' even if you’re not and most importantly it’s an instant route to a filler-free boost. Follow this guide to the fullest pout possible:
STEP 1: PREP
Start by gently rubbing a targeted scrub like Estée Lauder Envy Smooth Sugar Scrub in circular motion over your lips. ‘A baby’s toothbrush or a damp flannel also works to stimulate blood flow and whip off any dead skin,’ says Deveney. ‘This step is critical as otherwise any roughness will show up under the metallic make-up to come.’ Next apply a deeply hydrating lip treatment such as ESPA Nourishing Lip Treatment, which contains plumping hyaluronic acid that seeps into the skin to hydrate, soothe, condition and plump from within. Dab balm on top. Fabled by Marie Claire swears by By Terry Baume De Rose Lip Balm which strengthens the natural skin barrier and keep lips moist and sheeny – an effect you want as matte texture can make lips look flat.
STEP 2: LINE
First identify your lip shape and understand what areas you would like volume. ‘If you have an extra thin top or bottom lip draw over it with a very sheer, nude lip pencil,’ say Deveney who suggests Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-In-Place Lip Pencil in Clear. ‘If you want to define and accentuate the cupids bow, blend a cream highlighter onto the top lip before applying the lip liner but keep it soft,’ she says.
Illamasqua Aura Topcoat is a super-refined highlighter. If you your lips are thin all over Deveney recommends applying your lip pencil over the entire lip to prevent the line from being too harsh.
STEP 3: FILL
Now is the time to create your optical illusion. ‘If one lip is smaller than the other use a darker lip colour on larger lip and a very slightly lighter colour on the smaller lip to balance them out,’ says Deveney.
Then go for a deeply moisturising lipstick like Yves Saint Laurent Volupte Plump-in-Colour. This lipstick hero is infused with coconut and pomegranate oils and contains glycols to boost circulation and peppermint extract for a cooling, lip enhancing sensation. Or try a plumping gloss stick like Clinique Chubby Plump & Shine Portly Peach. Deveney recommends using a wide brush for optimum application to blend the lipstick into the liner. ‘Regular lip brushes tend to be on the small side so go with a concealer brush like Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage Brush instead.’
STEP 4: FINISH
Nothing boosts lips faster than a gloss. ‘The power of lip gloss lies in the fact you are unequivocally drawing attention to the mouth,’ says Deveney. Nars Multi-Use Gloss is wearable and not too sticky or gloopy. Just apply it to the middle of the lips and pat them together.
Smashbox O-Plump Intuitive Lip Plumper can be worn on its own and goes on clear and adjusts to your personal lip shade. If you want to really go big, choose glosses with a hint of shimmer.
bareMinerals Moxie Plumping Lip Gloss is like refined glitter so it’s subtle but still catches the light to make lips appear fuller. Layer it up but use the applicator to blend towards the outer edges to prevent it from looking too Barbie.
